How To Disassemble A Cingular 2125 And Fix The
Joystick
The
following are directions on taking apart a Cingular 2125
for whatever reason you need to. Please note that taking apart your Cingular
2125 WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. 2125resource.com,
2125resource.com's authors, 2125resource.com's sponsors and
2125resource.com's advertisers take no responsibility in damage done to
your Cingular 2125. Perform this at your
own risk.
There
are a few reasons why you may need to take your Cingular
2125 apart, the main reason I can think of, is if you
were like me and hundreds of other Cingular 2125
owners who were clumbsy enough to spill some sort of beverage on their Cingular
2125's. And of course, since warranties do not cover
cafe mocha under the keys, there's no sense in paying $200 for a
repair, or $300 for a new Cingular 2125.
The joystick
on the Cingular 2125 uses micro-switches
to sense the directions pressed. These micro-switches use an electric
contact lubricant to increase conductivity. When a beverage or liquid
is spilled onto/into the Cingular 2125,
the lubricant can be rinsed away, or it could become thickened and
non-conducive.
There is
a cheap, simple fix for this, there's an electric lubricant that almost
everyone has in their house. This would be WD-40. Yes, WD-40. I will
show you how to fix the joystick on your Cingular
2125 with WD-40.
You'll
want to make sure you have everything you need to start this project.
- T-5 Torx
driver (you can get this at Home Depot for about $4, do not pay $11 for
one online)
- A small
slotted screw driver (the smaller, the better)
- Can of
WD-40
- Steady
Hands
- Case
opening tool (fancy word for credit card)
- Compressed
air
Start
off by removing the battery cover, battery, SIM card and MiniSD card.
You will see 2 screws at the bottom end of your Cingular
2125, there is also a 3rd screw under the "WARRANTY VOID
IF REMOVED" sticker. Now, before you remove this sticker, this is your
chance to stop if you do not feel comfortable with doing this.

After
you remove the 3rd screw, you need to remove the antena cover. The
antena cover is held on by two clips on each end. You can unhook two of
the clips by inserting your small slotted screw driver into the holes
on the right and left of the battery contacts (see below). Becareful
doing this, try to keep the screw driver as parallel to the Cingular
2125 as possible to avoid scratching the motherboard
with the screw driver.

After
you remove the antena cover, you will see the last two screws to
remove. Once you remove those screws, you can use a case opening tool,
or credit card, or driver's license to seperate the case. Do this by
sliding the opening tool along the sides of the Cingular
2125 and along the top and bottom. Do not force the case
apart and do not completely open it yet!
STOP
RIGHT NOW! Before you go pulling the case apart, you will need to
disconnect the ribbon cable for the camera. You will see the ribbon
cable plugged into the motherboard just behind the camera button on the
side of the Cingular 2125. Unplug the
ribbon cable by gently lifting it up with your small slotted screw
driver.

Now you
can seperate the case.
Next,
you will need to unplug the keypad ribbon cable. This is the copper
plug next to the SIM card tray. Again, use your small slotted screw
driver to gently lift the plug.

Now you
will remove the motherboard from the case. The Cingular
2125's motherboard is held on by 2 clips on each side.
Just use your thumb to carefully move one of the clips to the side and
lift the motherboard out. Becareful of the screen. The 2125's
screen just lays on the motherboard, do not let the screen fall away
from the motherboard or you may rip the screen's ribbon cable.
You can
now see the back of the keypad unit. You will now want to remove the
screen lens from the front side case. This is just stuck inside the
case, you can just press it out. Becareful not to smudge up the inside
of the lens with finger prints.
To oil
the joystick, just spray a small amount
of WD-40 into the joystick unit. Small
amount.

Wipe
away any excess WD-40. Put the lens back into the case. Wipe any finger
prints off of the inside of the lens, becareful not to rub over the
black sealing foam or it will leave large smudges that are hard to
remove. Use compressed air to remove any dust or lint on the inside of
the lens.
Reassemble
the Cingular 2125 and your joystick
should be working alot better than it was.
